Khilok ( _ru. Хилок) is a town in
Zabaykalsky Krai ,Russia , located on theKhilok River km to mi|261 west of Chita. Population: 10,700 (2005 est.); 11,152 (2002 Census). It is an administrative centre ofKhiloksky District and railway station.Since the middle of the 17th century the first
Cossack expeditions explored the region but Cossacks didn't found any permanent settlement because the region was highly populated withBuryats andEvenks .Peter I the Great granted wide autonomy to the local princes. Thus, the region was not colonized by Russians until the end of the 19th century when the construction of theTrans-Siberian Railway had been launched here.Khilok was founded in 1895 as a railway station of the Trans-Siberian Railway. Khilok was granted town status in 1951.
