It has an average elevation of 406 metres (1332 ft).Gangavathi is commercially very active place. Since it is situated close on the border of Andhra pradesh, you can find a very distinct influence of Telugu in the town. Although kannada is the primary language spoken here you can find a lot of people who can speak both Telugu and Kannada comfortably. Hampi, a well known UNESCO Heritage site is just 14 km from this place. There other places of historical importance like Anegundi, Kanakagiri, Hemagudda etc. in it's vicinity. Gangavathi was one many talukas in Raichur District. When Koppal district was carved out of Raichur, Gangavathi became part of Koppal district.
