Theatre of Voices

Theatre of Voices

Theatre of Voices is a vocal ensemble founded in 1992 which focuses on early music and new music. Members of the U.S.-based group are from both the United States and England. It was formed by Paul Hillier as an avenue to do more contemporary music when his group, the Hilliard Ensemble, focused primarily on early music. Hillier created the group while he was teaching at the University of California, Davis. The group has collaborated with a number of composers, including Steve Reich, Arvo Pärt, and John Adams. They premiered Reich's "The Cave" along with his musicians, his "Proverb" (1995) was written for Theatre of Voices, and they also premiered John Adams' "El Niño" (the DVD of which won a Grammy). The group records with Harmonia Mundi USA and tours internationally. Their recording of Pärt's "De profundis" was in the Billboard Top Ten Albums. The group's membership depends on the needs of the specific project they are working on, however the members listed below are most often involved in one way or another.
