BITSAT (BITS Admission Test) is the computer based online test for entrance to one of the most reputed technical institutes in India: BITS Pilani (Birla Institute of Technology & Science), for its campuses located in Pilani, Goa and Hyderabad. BITSAT is conducted in the months of May through June. It was started in 2005 with about 48000 students giving this test. The number increased to 117,000 students competing for 2,000 seats in 2008, giving a selectivity of 1 in 59. In 2007, 90,000 students competed for 1,404 seats, giving a selectivity of 1 in 63.
For BITS Pilani merit is the sole criterion and the aspiring candidates are required to have a minimum aggregate of 80% in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics in the 12th examination with at least 60% marks in each of the subjects. Board toppers can apply for direct admissions also.
BITSAT is a 3 hour duration test offered to candidates on computers at dedicated computer centres at different cities spread across India. The test has objective type (multiple choice) questions only. The various areas in which the candidates are tested are Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Biology, English and Logical Reasoning.
To further the cause of women education, BITS Pilani has shown a special gesture by making the BITSAT application fee for girl candidates as Rs 400/- only instead of Rs 800/-. In addition, the Institute will try its best to accommodate all girl candidates at their first preference of test centre for appearing in BITSAT.
