It was established to commemorate the Diamond Jubilee celebrations of Queen Victoria in 1898. The school has served the educational needs of Gobichettipalayam and nearby villages for more than a century. The school was the role model for the PSG and Sarvajana institutions of Coimbatore. A noted headmaster of the school was Thiru. K.M.Ramasami Gounder, who shaped the lives of thousands of students in the region. He also founded Gobi Arts College. He served as District Board Member, MLC and MLA.

DJHSS has some 2,300 students and 60 staff.[1] It is a private school but it is largely funded by the Tamil Nadu State Government, which pays the teachers' salaries.[2] This enables the school to serve the educational requirements of the needy by offering education for a nominal fee. In 2004, a DJHSS student finished joint top in the Erode District in the Secondary School Leaving Certificate examination, with 490 marks out of 500.[3]

DJHSS places an emphasis on discipline, using corporal punishment in the form of caning when required.[citation needed] The school has embraced new technology: students had access to computers as early as the mid eighties.

DJHSS was one of the early schools adopted English medium education in the rural south India. English medium curriculum was introduced in the year 1976. It was introduced well after classes were started, wherein some of the students who were admitted to English medium were made to write exam in Tamil Medium and later part of the year English medium classes were started.
