Gobi or Gobichettipalayam is a semi-rural community in the Erode District of Tamil Nadu state, India. Major part of present Gobichettipalayam was previously known as Verapandi Gramam, and more quondam documents and records still use that name. Gobichettipalayam boasts some famous tourist spots like Kodivery dam and Gunderi Pallam Dam near the periphery of forests. This place is also famous for religious attractions like Pariyur Kondathu Kaliamman Temple, Pachaimalai Balamurugan Hill Temple and Pavalamalai Muthu Kumaraswamy Hill Temple. Because of the scenic beauty and cultural richness, outdoor shooting of the film industry thrives in this area.

Because of the cultural and religious importance, people prefer Gobi for marriages of their kith and kin. People as far as from Delhi with roots in Tamilnadu, conduct their marriage rituals here. That paved the way for a strong Cook's association (Samayal Kalaignar Sangam).

Geography

At coordinates coord|11.46|N|77.43|E|, Gobichettipalayam is about 40 km from District headquarters Erode and 85 km from Coimbatore. It is warm and humid for most of the year. The surrounding water logged paddy fields contribute to the high humidity levels.

Demographics

As of 2001 India census, [GR|India] Gobichettipalayam had a population of 55,150. Males constitute 49% of the population and females 51%. Gobichettipalayam has an average literacy rate of 74%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 80%, and female literacy is 68%. In Gobichettipalayam, 9% of the population is under 6 years of age.

] The Lok Sabha constituency an agrarian constituency situated in the belt of Keezhbhavani ayacuts. The electorate of the constituency has been frequently faced with problems over sharing water between the new and old ayacut areas, which has remained an unresolved issue over the years despite court rulings and promises by various governments. There are six Assembly segments in this constituency. Sathyamangalam, Bhavanisagar, Gobichettipalayam, Andhiyur, Perunthurai and Bhavani. This is also one of the constituencies where the women voters outnumber men. Out of the total electorate of 45,261 voters, 22,668 are women, surpassing 22,693 men.

Economy

The economy of Gobichettipalayam centers on rice paddies, sugarcane, banana,rice,tobacco and turmeric. There are also growing numbers of spinning mills to support the weaving industry developing in the region.Gobi is also a very famous spot for cinema shootings. Lots of Tamil, Malayalam, and few Hindi movies has been shot in Gobi.Chinnathambi, Parambarai, Janaki Raman, Tulasi, Senthamizh Pattu are some of them.

Infrastructure

Gobichettipalayam is well connected by two main roads (major district roads) passing through the center of the town. One connecting Erode and Sathiyamangalam and another connecting Gobichettipalayam and Dharapuram.The Primary and tertiary activities are the Main Function of Gobichettipalayam town. This town can be considered as Bi-Functional Town. Gobichettipalayam Town comprises three revenue villages namely “VIRAPANDI” and parts of other villages viz. “LAKKAMPATTY” and “MODACHUR” These villages are having three different types of soils viz. black loam, red loam and red sand. The major portion is covered by red loam, then comes red sand and black loam. The percentages of the Red loam, Red sand and Black loam are 50%, 30% and 20% respectively. In general, the soil in and around the town is of fertile nature and is good for agriculture purposes.

Climate condition

The temperature here is moderate throughout the year except during summer. The average rainy days are 50 in a year. It is exceptionally dry and its rainfall is scanty, uncertain and not well distributed. It is warm and humid for most of the year.

Fairs and festivals

There are two old hill temples dedicated to Lord Subramania at Pavalamalai and the other to Lord Muruga at Pachamalai by names, at a distance of 3.0 kilometer from the town centre. At a distance of 5.0 kilometer from the town, there is an old “Siva Temple” at Pariyur which was patronized by Cholas and Koysalas. There is one Seetha Kalyanamandapam constructed in a vast area where 4 marriage functions could take place at a time. Also there is an Amman Temple situated in Pariyur which is 5 Kilometer from Gobichettipalayam Town where “Fire Walking Ceremony” is held during December – January every year. Annual car festival is conducted here in the month of January for three days. This temple attracts large gathering from the surrounding places during festival time.

Other Physical Features Agricultural

Gobichettipalayam being an Agricultural Town, has got cultivable lands. An Anaicut namely “Kodiveri Anaicut” situated in Gobichettipalayam Taluk, about 1.6 km. west of Gobichettipalayam Town was constructed by the ancient Maharaja of Mysore in 17th century. Two channels from the anaicut are taken around this Town. One on the Northern side of Bhavani River and the other on the Southern side are called “Arakkan Kottai Channel” and “Thadapalli Channel” respectively. Lands North of Gobichettipalayam Town are fertile due to the flow of Thadapalli channel. Cultivation of Sugar cane and paddy are predominant in this Area.

Media and communication

The city has two major English dailies, The Hindu and The New Indian Express . Tamil language dailies include Dina Malar,Dina Thanthi, Dina Mani and Dinakaran with two other dailies Tamil Murasu [14] and Malar [www.maalaimalar.com] published in the evening. A short wave radio station is operated by All India Radio, with most programmes in Tamil, English and Hindi. Five FM radio stations Available in Gobi, Rainbow FM by All India Radio and Suryan FM by the Sun Network. Radio Mirchi, Radio City, and Hello FM started their operations recently. All these private radio stations air exclusively Tamil based programmes, including film music

Gobi has good communication infrastructure, with all major service providers involved. Services available are DOT landline, CDMA and GSM. Fiber optic cables were laid in 2001, improving internet access which had begun with the establishment of a dial-up connection in 1996.

Gobichettipalayam cuisine

Gobichettipalayam cuisine is predominantly south Indian with rice as its base. Gobi flavours are generally fairly mild, with variations to suit local palette. Most locals still retain their rural flavour, with many restaurants serving food over a banana leaf.North Indian, Chinese and continental cuisines are also available. Mysorepa (a sweet made from lentil flour and ghee), idly, dosa, Halwa {a sweet made of different ingredients like milk,wheat, rice) and vada-sambar and Biryani are popular among the locals. The recent influx of coffee shops and pizza shops has increased and serving as hangout locations for the youth.

Culture

The people of Gobi are generally regarded warm and hospitable.The town is home to the Pariyur Kondathu Kaliamman Temple, a 5-acre (20,000 m²) Hindu temple dedicated to the goddess Kaliamman (an incarnation of Kali).The town is known for its lush green spectacular paddy fields that extend to the horizon in 360 degrees.
