Stream capacity

Stream capacity

The capacity of a stream or river is the total amount of sediment a stream is able to transport. This measurement usually corresponds to the stream gradient or a section along a stream profile. The ways in which sediments are transported by streams, or the stream load is comprised of three types: Bed Loads, Dissolved Loads, Suspended Loads.

Stream capacity is often mistaken for the stream competency which is has to do with the size of the particles that the stream can transport.
