kebab which can also be found in Syrian and Lebanese cuisines. Cubes of chicken are skewered and grilled. Common marinades are based upon yogurt or a tomato puree, though there are many variations. Shish taouk is typically eaten with garlic pastetoum .Etymology
Shish means
skewer in Turkish (and has been adopted in Lebanese-Arabic and Syrian-Arabic dialects, seekh is the word for it in classical Arabic); and taouk or "tavuk" (pronounced "tah -vouk") means chicken in Turkish. Tawook can refer to other kinds of poultry, e.g. thepeacock (Tawouk/Taus in Arabic طاووس).Methods of serving
The original Turkish version is served with rice and a garlic paste along with vegetables. The sandwich version comes in a flat bread or pita wrap seasoned with garlic paste, along with lettuce, tomatoes, and pickled turnips.
