Eppendorf (company)

Eppendorf is a biotechnology company, which develops, produces and distributes systems for use in life-science research laboratories worldwide.

Its product range includes pipettes, dispensers, and centrifuges as well as consumables such as micro test tubes and pipette tips. In addition, Eppendorf provides instruments and systems for cell manipulation, automated devices for liquid handling, complete equipment for DNA amplification and biochips.

Eppendorf products are located in academic and commercial research institutes as well as industrial companies in the field of biotechnology or in other sectors using biotech research processes. Their main market is North America followed by West Europe and Asia.

Eppendorf was founded on the campus of the University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf in 1945 and has more than 1,900 employees worldwide. The company has subsidiaries in 17 countries and is represented in all other markets by distributors.

In fiscal 2006, the company’s sales revenues amounted to € 314,4 million with earnings before interest and taxes (EBIT) of € 73,1 million.

Eppendorf Biochip Systems

Eppendorf Biochip Systems [http://www.eppendorf-biochip.com] is part of the Eppendorf company, specialized in microarray solutions for routine applications, including DNA microarrays for gene expression analysis, detection of infectious agents, and GMOs in food and feed. Furthermore, transcription factor microarrays and protein microarrays are offered as well as the colorimetric detection system, the Silverquant scanner and Silverquant labeling kit.

In collaboration with the Joint Research Centre (JRC) of the European Union, Eppendorf conducted a validation study with Eppendorf’s DualChip GMO microarray. A detailed description of the technology and the study can be found at http://bgmo.jrc.ec.europa.eu/home/docs.htm. The validation study was carried out within a European framework project (Co-Extra project) with the participation of 12 laboratories from 8 European countries working on GMOs.
