The Wisconsin Historical Society (formerly the State Historical Society of Wisconsin) is simultaneously a private membership and a state-funded organization whose purpose is to maintain, promote and spread knowledge relating to the
history ofNorth America , with an emphasis on the state ofWisconsin and the trans-Allegheny West. Founded in 1846 and chartered in 1853, it is the oldest historical society in theUnited States to receive continuous public funding. In addition to this library, the society opearates the
Wisconsin Historical Museum in downtown Madison and a publishing house, theWisconsin Historical Society Press , which publishes books on Wisconsin and American history and a quarterly magazine, the "Wisconsin Magazine of History". In more recent times, the society complemented its printed materials with a website boasting numerous features that include a large, searchable collection of historical images and a vast digital archive containing thousands of scanned documents relating to Wisconsin history.Historic Sites
In addition to all its other pursuits, the Wisconsin Historical Society owns nine historic sites that can be toured by the public. These sites are located in cities across the state.
