This dramatic new rodent was placed in the new genus "Laonastes", and was originally placed in a new family Laonastidae. Peruvian Arboreal Mouse "Rhagomys longilingua" (2003)

In 2003, a new species of mouse was discovered in Peru, the Peruvian Arboreal Mouse, or Woodpecker Mouse ("Rhagomys longilingua").
