Overview
Miles Cain is a writer, musician and storyteller based in York, UK. He has released several CDs of music and written two books, A Sonf For Nicky Moon (Last Dance books, 2010) and The Border, a book of poems (Valley Press, 2011). He often works in educational settings, giviing talks and performances.
Starting out in 1989 with friend Syd Egan, the pair formed a band, Trash, a semi-ironic reference to their punk attitude. The band disbanded after only two gigs, but Cain embarked on a career as a songwriter and performer. The Dark and The Light showed a more mature approach, with songs written by both Cain and Egan, the former taking his cues from Van Morrison, The Waterboys and others. Time To Credit Marvels, named after a line in a poem by Seamus Heaney, included stand-out song "Waking Up With The House On Fire" and more acoustic moments, including Egan's playful "Steamin' Train Blues". The solo affair Naked, recorded in 1996, showed more soulful songs. "Fairground Town" (CD single), released in 1998, saw Egan and Cain again combine for a song that sung the dubious joys of life in Hull, where Cain lived between 1994 and 2002. Gaining a reputation as a live act, Cain began to play support slots for Martyn Joseph, The Blockheads, Juliet Turner, Jackie Leven and Ed Harcourt. Different Destinations was begun in 1999 with producer Paul Davies, and was finally released in the summer of 2004. A strong set of songs continued to show Cain's ear for a melody, and included the Egan song "All Of Our Lives". This tune was to become an audience favourite. Miles Cain's album, A Way Of Being Free was released in April 2007.
