- Saint-Valery-en-Caux
Saint-Valery-en-Caux is a seaside town and commune of the
Seine Maritime "département",Haute-Normandie "région",Normandy ,France , located 30 km west of Dieppe and 30 km east ofFécamp .It is said to have been founded by
Benedictine monks in 990 CE. It is a small fishing port in a sheltered basin surrounded by high chalk cliffs, its main source of income is now tourism. It has a population of around 6,000.It is best known as the place where the British 51st (Highland) Infantry Division and French troops surrendered to
Erwin Rommel on June 121940 . The town was largely destroyed in the fighting in 1940. During the action French Cavalry on horseback faced German tanks.Town Twinning
