Liam Campbell is an Irish Republican from
Dundalk ,County Louth ,Republic of Ireland .Background
His brother Sean died in December 1975, when a landmine he was preparing for an attack on the
British Army exploded prematurely. His other brother Peter served 14 years in prison forProvisional Irish Republican Army (IRA) offences. Liam Campbell first came to the attention of the British and Irish security forces in the early 1980s and was became was the subject of an exclusion order in 1983 barring him from enteringNorthern Ireland . Campbell is believed to have been expelled from the IRA shortly after their 1997 ceasefire, because of his alleged
smuggling activities. He was close toMichael McKevitt , who later formed the Real IRA and Campbell joined that organisation with the task of 'Director of Operations' for Northern Ireland. In essence this meant that he was in charge of organising all bomb attacks in that area.Real IRA
He was convicted by a court in the
Republic of Ireland in May 2004 for membership of the Real IRA and was sentenced to eight years imprisonment. Liam Campbell is one of five men being sued by relatives of the victims of the 1998Omagh bombing .
