Liam Campbell

Liam Campbell

Liam Campbell is an Irish Republican from Dundalk, County Louth, Republic of Ireland.

Background

His brother Sean died in December 1975, when a landmine he was preparing for an attack on the British Army exploded prematurely. His other brother Peter served 14 years in prison for Provisional Irish Republican Army (IRA) offences. Liam Campbell first came to the attention of the British and Irish security forces in the early 1980s and was became was the subject of an exclusion order in 1983 barring him from entering Northern Ireland. Expulsion

Campbell is believed to have been expelled from the IRA shortly after their 1997 ceasefire, because of his alleged smuggling activities. He was close to Michael McKevitt, who later formed the Real IRA and Campbell joined that organisation with the task of 'Director of Operations' for Northern Ireland. In essence this meant that he was in charge of organising all bomb attacks in that area.

Real IRA

He was convicted by a court in the Republic of Ireland in May 2004 for membership of the Real IRA and was sentenced to eight years imprisonment. Liam Campbell is one of five men being sued by relatives of the victims of the 1998 Omagh bombing.
