July 22 ,1946 inBucharest ) is aRomania n politician, formerPrime Minister of Romania from1989 to1991 , when his government was overthrown by the intervention of the miners led byMiron Cozma . He is a member of theClub of Madrid , grouping 66 democratic former heads of state and government.He was also the president of the Senate from
1996 to1999 and Minister of Foreign Affairs from1999 to2000 . He is now leader of the Democratic Force party, which he founded after leaving the Democratic Party in 2003.His father,
Valter Roman , ofTransylvania n Jewish descent, was a veteran of theSpanish Civil War , aComintern activist, and a prominent member of theRomanian Communist Party . His mother Hortensia Vallejo was of Spanish origin. The couple married inMoscow , and he has several siblings. In 1974 Roman married Mioara Georgescu, with whom he has two daughters, Oana and Catinca. In February 2007, husband and wife confirmed that they were divorcing; the divorce was made final onGood Friday , April 6, 2007.Roman first rose to prominence during the
