World Refugee Day

World Refugee Day

In 2000 the United Nations General Assembly decided that as from 2001, 20 June will be celebrated as World Refugee Day to mark the 50th anniversary of the 1951 Convention relating to the Status of Refugees. The Organization of African Unity had agreed for it to coincide with their Africa Refugee Day.UN document |docid=A-RES-55-76 |type=Resolution |body=General Assembly |session=55 |resolution_number=76 |accessdate=2008-09-04|date=4 December 2000]

Each year, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) selects a theme and coordinates events across the globe. The 2003 celebration focused on children.

Africa Refugee Day has been recognized prior to 1997. [cite web|url=http://www.anc.org.za/ancdocs/history/mandela/1997/st970620.html|title=Message from President Nelson Mandela on Africa Refugee Day|date=20 June 1997]
