The base is small compared to its counter, Haakonsvern in Bergen. It lost its status as an orlogsstasjon in 2002. It is now a subordinate unit of Haakonsvern and no units are permanently stationed there. A consequence of the restructuring of the Royal Norwegian Navy is that the base may be shut down in the near future.
On 14 March 2005, an accident in a scuba exercise inside the base led to the death of SBS commander Lieutenant Colonel Richard van der Horst.[2]
