Diegueño Middle School is a middle school in Encinitas, in San Diego County, California, United States, serving students in 7th and 8th grades as part of the San Dieguito Union High School District. The school was founded in 1985. Since then, there have been many state-of-the-art improvements of equipment, appliances, and technology.

As of the 2005-06 school year, the school had an enrollment of 962 students and 37.6 classroom teachers (on an FTE basis), for a student-teacher ratio of 25.6.[1]

Diegueño has been rivals with Oak Crest Middle School since Diegueño was built.

Programs and curriculum

The school is part of a district-wide program that offers students the opportunity to take additional classes on Saturday mornings.[2]


Some of the electives offered include Spanish, Multi-Media, and journalism. The name of the school newspaper is called The Diegueno Sun. Art is also taught there.

Awards and recognition

For both the 1992-93 and the 1999-2000 school years, Diegueño Middle School was recognized with the Blue Ribbon Award from the United States Department of Education, the highest honor that an American school can achieve.[3]

Diegueño was recognized as a California Distinguished School in both 1999,2003, and 2010.[4]
