Henry Marlowe Middle School is a middle school located in Lake in the Hills, Illinois.

With the completion of the new addition on the building and the ever-increasing student population curriculum options are in the process of being reviewed.

History

Name history

Henry Marlowe was born in Mount Vernon, Illinois. He was Huntley's first agriculture teacher, teaching from 1931 to 1951. Mr. Marlowe and his wife, Helen, founded Marlowe Feed & Hatchery which operated in Huntley for 60 years. He later served as a school board member.

However, there was some tension in the naming of this school and others.

In Cary, renaming a middle school became a community-wide debate in 2002 when the District 26 school board voted to re-name Cary Junior High after the district’s retiring superintendent, Tim Kelly. Students signed petitions opposing the name change and parents spoke out against it because they wanted the school to retain the name that it had had for 30 years, they said.

The school board changed the name back to Cary Junior High two months later.

But in 2005, Huntley District 158 opened four new schools named after local figures, without controversy—Mackeben Elementary School, Marion Conley Elementary School, Bernice Heineman Middle School and Henry Marlowe Middle School.

“The name of a school should reflect what’s important to the community, and if that’s an individual then that’s OK,” Wright said.

Joe Weyland, a Woodstock resident on the District 200 School Name Committee, said he agreed that people’s names should be considered.

“That's why we're here: To retain the history of this community and to make sure that it is kept up,” he said. [http://www.nwherald.com/articles/2007/02/19/news/local/doc45d96e68e38af436387784.txt]

Marlowe Middle School officially opened on Sunday, April 17, 2005. Marlowe family members watched as School Board President Mike Skala cut the ribbon.

Beta Club

The school has a Beta Club. It is an honors program with an emphasis on community service.

ports

Teams

Each grade at MMS is divided into teams. For example, the 6th grade teams are team 6-1, and team 6-2, and 6-3. Each of them has a specific horse mascot, though they are the only grade to have this. These teams have a teacher for each course subject (Language Arts, Mathematics, Special Needs etc.). The team students and their teachers bond throughout the year.
