It is located in the north-eastern part of the state and is named after the Indigo Valley andIndigo Creek which runs into theMurray River through the shire.It includes the towns of Beechworth, Chiltern and Rutherglen. It has an area of 2,070 square kilometres. In
2006 it had a population of 14,800. It was formed in1994 from the merger of theShire of Rutherglen ,Shire of Chiltern ,Shire of Yackandandah andUnited Shire of Beechworth .Indigo was rated fifteenth of 590 Australian Local Government Areas in the
