Green Bay East High School

Green Bay East High School is a public high school in the Green Bay Area Public School District serving Green Bay, Wisconsin and its surrounding communities (including the villages of Bellevue and Allouez). The school's street address is 1415 East Walnut Street.

History

The educational enterprise that has come to be known as East High School has been located in only three buildings over a 145 year history. The first building was built on Howe Street in 1856 on land donated by the Astor family. This building was known as “Old Brick” and continued to serve as the administrative offices for the school system after classes were moved to other locations. The beginning of East High School is generally attributed to Professor Furber’s decision to add Latin and Mathematics to the grade school curriculum in 1860. The first class of six students, 4 male and 2 female, earned their diplomas in 1875.

In 1893, a new building known officially as the East Side High School was built in the 500 block of South Webster. Unofficially, this handsome red sandstone building was referred to as “the school on the hill”, and the students attending the school were referred to as the “Hilltoppers”. This building was dismantled in 1940 after the current Washington Middle School was built and the red sandstone blocks were used to construct a garage, gatehouse and walls at City Stadium, the home of the Green Bay Packers. The garage and the North wall remain standing and can be seen just to the North of the current East High School building.

The core building of the current East High School was built on a 23 acre parcel purchased from the Hagemeister estate for $80,000.00. Construction was completed by the Fall of 1924 at a cost of $661,492.31. The class of 1925 was the first class to graduate from the new building.

More recently, East High School underwent further renovation and expansion. The 21 million dollar project was completed in March 2003 and added a new science wing and gym.

2007 Conspiracy Charges

Bradley Netwal, 19, William Cornell, 17, and Shawn Sturtz, 18, were arrested for allegedly planning an attack on Green Bay East High School in late 2006. The teens are accused of planning an attack on the high school in September with guns and homemade bombs. According to the criminal complaint, Sturtz told another student about the plan, and that student notified school officials. All three teens entered pleas of no contest in Brown County (WI) court in Green Bay on August 13, 2007. In separate plea agreements, Cornell and Sturtz pleaded no contest to conspiracy to commit homicide, Cornell for possession of explosives and possession of a sawed-off shotgun, and Netwal for conspiracy to damage property with explosives. Other charges against the three were dropped in exchange for the pleas. Authorities stated that Cornell and Sturtz were fascinated by the April 1999 Columbine High School massacre in Littleton, Colo. and had planned the East High School attack for two to three years. Netwal, who had graduated from the school in 2006, went along with the plot because he didn't want others to think he was a coward. Athletics

The mascot for athletics is the Red Devil, a reference to the red clay-based Devil River that wraps around the school (which has since been renamed the East River). Currently, it is part of the Fox River Classic Conference (FRCC) consisting of Green Bay West, Green Bay Southwest, Green Bay Preble, De Pere, Bay Port, Pulaski, Ashwaubenon, Notre Dame Academy, Manitowoc Lincoln, Sheboygan North, and Sheboygan South High Schools.

Green Bay East and its crosstown rival Green Bay West celebrated 100 years of football competition in 2005. East, led by coach John Kolstad, won the game 56-8. A time capsule was created which will transfer annually to the winning team until 2030. Following the 2006 season John Kolstad retired after nearly 2 decades as Head Coach of the Red Devils and handed the reins to offensive coordinator and offensive line coach Brian Nast to take over, Brian is a teacher at East and is a graduate of Bay Port High School. East enjoys a rich tradition of football dating back to Curly Lambeau and Jim Crowley

The Red Devils play at City Stadium, which was home of the Green Bay Packers from 1926–1956. Now, it is known as East Stadium or Old City Stadium. Recent renovations of the school included ornamental fencing and monuments to the history of the field thanks to the Green Bay Packers.

The Green Bay East Red Devil Cross Country team is currently coached by Theresa Gilles.
