website_name =The Hundred of Hoo School is a comprehensive
secondary school located in theHoo Peninsula , in the village ofHoo . The school provides standard secondary education as well as offering advanced media facilities. The complex also includes a nursery, a conference centre and sports centre. The school holds specialistArts College status.History of the school
Opened in 1956-1957, the Hundred of Hoo is named after the Saxon Hundreds and the parish of
Hoo St Werburgh , in which the village is located. Each parish was expected to provide 100 soldiers for the King in Saxon times, when required! Its secondary school now provides education for nearly 1,800 boys, girls, young men and women aged 11-19. The village of Hoo is one of half a dozen on theIsle of Grain , on theHoo Peninsula situated between theThames andMedway . It is also close toStrood , Rochester,Chatham ,Gillingham andRainham (theMedway Towns ), which have a population of 250,000, due to expand significantly in the future as part of theThames Gateway .Medway is a Unitary Authority, formerly part of North Kent, known as Medway City Council, with 19 secondary schools. The school draws its students from the peninsula, which is part rural and part suburban, and the
Medway Towns , particularlyStrood . Its intake is broadly comprehensive, although some Year 6 pupils take the11+ and access the Medway City Council Grammar Schools. In 1992 the Hundred of Hoo School and Hoo Middle School, on adjacent sites, merged as one into the existing buildings. Much additional building work has occurred since, providing the school with good specialist facilities and social areas for each year group, including a large
Sixth Form common room. An examination hall/exhibition/meeting venue, called theMorris Poole Examination Suite has recently been built and is able to accommodate up to 350 examinees or an audience of 600+. Each learning area has an ICT Suite. Specialist Drama and Music provision is to a high standard.A Media Centre, which formed part of a successful Media Arts Bid (Specialist School Status achieved September 2004), was completed during 2005-2006. The school has also used the Big Lottery Fund to provide artificial pitches and a pavilion, opened in January 2007.
The Hundred of Hoo School has a long tradition of success, with many alumni in professional, scientific and media careers. These successes reflect the strong record of Higher Education entry and successful degree completion. Students have also successfully entered a wide range of other vocations, including several who are currently working at the school, as teachers or support staff.
The Hundred of Hoo school gained the title of top 'Media' College in Kent for 2007.
