History

About convert|7|acre|m2 of land on Greenway Avenue were purchased in 1936 as the site for the high school. The grounds are near protective breastworks constructed in 1861 during the Civil War. An athletic field and stadium were constructed next to the school. Students began attending in 1936. [http://www.allconet.org/forthill/genabout.html About Fort Hill] , Fort Hill High School. Accessed June 20, 2007.]

A new gymnasium was built in 1980, and the school went through extensive renovations in 1991-92. A new music wing, greenhouse and art rooms were added in 1996.

Athletics

Facilities

The school gymnasium is used for league basketball.

Greenway Avenue Stadium, located at the school, was constructed in the 1930s by the Public Works Administration as part of President Roosevelt's New Deal and was built for the high school as "Fort Hill Stadium". The stadium, since renamed to reflect its joint use by other area schools, is considered to be an historic landmark. A proposed $7 million renovation project to update and expand the 70-year-old facility is in the works. Accusation of racism

On September 19, 2008, players of Fort Hill's football team allegedly used racial slurs toward opposing players from Dunbar High School (Washington, D.C.).
