The college was established in 1954 by the Christian Brothers as St Edmund's War Memorial College. It was opened to meet the demand for a Catholic Education school in the region and was the first Catholic Secondary Boys' College established in the Australian Capital Territory. The school is a community enlightened by the teachings of the Catholic Faith and committed to forming students in the faith values of their parents and leading them to a mature commitment to Jesus Christ.

History

St Edmund's College opened in 1954

Coat of Arms

The Shield
The Pelican is a symbol of Christ. Heraldic designs usually represent the Pelican, with wings endorsed and neck embowed, wounding her breast with her beak to feed her young. When in her nest feeding her young with her blood, she is said to be "in her piety". The word "piety" has a reciprocal significance. The Romans called filial love "piety". Virgil calls his hero "pius Aeneas," because of the filial love he showed to his father, Anchises. The symbolism of the Pelican to figure Christ goes back to the earliest Christian times and has continued throughout the centuries.

The Crest
The Crest of the Coat-of-Arms is the Triple Tiara of Pope Pius X who did so much to spread devotion to Christ in the Blessed Eucharist. The Supporting Cross Keys are the Papal keys of Pope Pius X.

Motto
The Motto completes the symbolism. "Christus Lux Mea" means "Christ is my light". It will be seen, then, that the motif of the College Coat-of-Arms is Christ. He is to be our Light, our Leader and our Love.

The blazon of the coat-of-arms in heraldic terms, is:
Shield: An Ecusson shield engrailed on a field of blue (Az. Azure.)
Arms: A pelican in her piety. (White. Argent.)
Crest: Papal or Triple Tiara of Pope Pius X. Bishop Mantling. (White.Argent.)
Supporters: Cross Keys. (Gold. Or.)
Motto: "Christus Lux Mea." (Az. Azure.) (Latin; "Christ is my light.")

Edmund Rice Foundation

In reflecting the spirit of charity of Edmund Rice, St Edmund's College established The Edmund Rice Foundation with the aim of giving financial assistance to disadvantaged families to deminish the burden of educating their children. Since its inception in 1988, the Edmund Rice Foundation has supported the education of over 100 students as well as providing much needed assistance to the poor and underprivileged.

Rugby Union

The College won the Waratah Shield intermittently, although schools in the ACT are no longer permitted to participate by the organisers. The College has over 480 registered boys playing rugby union.
