Lolly Pop is a recording artist and protégé of Minneapolis producers Monte Moir (The Time, Janet Jackson, Vanity 6), Doctor Fink (Prince and The Revolution) as well as English hit maker Ricardo Autobahn.

Pop's animated stage presence and striking vocals are frequently compared to pop acts Missing Persons, Gwen Stefani and early MadonnaFact|date=January 2008.

Biography

With the purchase of an Emerson turn table/tuner at the age of 8, Pop was immediately hooked on music. As a child growing up in Zimbabwe, Africa, she scoured record stores for hits, was a Top of the Pops addict and produced her own nightly lip sync show honoring faves such as Cyndi Lauper, Falco and Shannon.

Pop eventually landed in Minneapolis, home to Prince and other pop luminaries. With $200 in her pocket, she began winding her way through the Minneapolis music scene as a club kid and aspiring artist.

In the 90's Pop received several breaks as a dancer for the R&B/funk outfits Fast Traffic, Clique and B. Thompson. She later worked with the Lords of Acid, and was tapped to appear in Prince and the New Power Generation's music video "Get Wild."

After a studio internship with Morris Hayes as well as two years at the Twin/Tone Records label, Pop formed TELEPHONE!- an Electro-hop trio that caught the attention of Doctor Fink as well as Moir.

Under the guidance of Moir, Lolly Pop & The Couture Club was formed. Their Glamorous '06 tour- which featured Moir as a member of The Couture Club- launched in November 2006 and drew acclaim across North America. Produced by British favorite Ricardo Autobahn as well as Moir and Fink, Pop released her eponymous debut in February 2007 on Modo Veloce Records. The Elevator Operator maxi single followed, along with an Elevator Operator video, which was remixed by Danny Morris and distributed in the U.S. by Rockamerica Inc.

Quotes

"Lolly Pop's self-titled debut is an event in itself. It's a tongue-in-cheek disco opera struck with cocaine-era Minneapolis music and hair-band-era British pop."

- Peter Scholtes, City Pages, Minneapolis, MN

"A fascinating mix of cartoony, urban-chic lyrics and bubbly electro beats."

- Chris Riemenschneider, Star Tribune, Minneapolis, MN

"Fun with a capital F!"

- Si Wooldridge, synthpop.net

"Besides Prince himself, the most vocal Twin Cities artist to pick up the gauntlet!"

- Peter Scholtes, City Pages, Minneapolis, MN

Trivia

* "Elevator Operator," the first single from "Lolly Pop", is featured in the film "Loveless in Los Angeles". The song also appeared in the arcade game "DTX (Dance Trax)".

* Lolly Pop is a huge fan of 80s music. Her record features two 80s covers: a down tempo rendition of Duran Duran's "The Chauffeur" and a dance version of ZZ Top's "Sharp Dressed Man."

* Pop's favorite artist is Adam Ant. "Dress Up," her debut album's opening track, is a tribute to the "Goody Two Shoes" singer.

* The "Lolly Pop" album track "Glamorous Life" is a nod to Prince protégé Sheila E.

* "Pop Musik" by M is (befittingly) Lolly Pop's favorite video.

* Pop's first 7" vinyl purchase was the single "Big In Japan" by Alphaville.

* The maxi-single for "Elevator Operator" features a "Tokyo POP Version" by the UK remixer Pimps And Whores (Music). The remix title is a nod to the cult 1988 film "Tokyo Pop".

Charitable Efforts

Heavily involved with organizations including Second Harvest Heartland, The Bridge For Runaway Youth, The Harriet Tubman Center, Amnesty International and Planned Parenthood, Lolly Pop created the "Music for Charity" program to benefit these groups and donated 30% of her 2005 touring profits.

Pop also organized "Girlfest 2004" to support The Harriet Tubman Center.
