Baron Stanley of Alderley

Baron Stanley of Alderley

Baron Stanley of Alderley, in the County of Chester, is a title in the Peerage of the United Kingdom. It was created in 1839 for Sir John Stanley, 7th Baronet, of Alderley Hall. He was succeeded by his son, the second Baron, who was a prominent Liberal politician. Two years prior to succeeding his father, in 1848, he had been created Baron Eddisbury, of Winnington in the County Palatine of Chester, in the Peerage of the United Kingdom. In 1909 the latter's son, the fourth Baron Stanley of Alderley, succeeded to the Barony of Sheffield and became the 4th Baron Sheffield as well. The three Baronies remain united.

The Baronetcy, of Alderley Hall in the County of Chester, had been created in the Baronetage of England in 1660 for the barrister Thomas Stanley. He was a descendant of Hon. Sir John Stanley, third son of Thomas Stanley, 1st Baron Stanley (whose son was created Earl of Derby in 1485). The first Baron Stanley of Alderley was a great-great-great-grandson of the first Baronet.

The London townhouse of the Stanley family at 40 Dover Street was purchased by The Arts Club, a thoroughly estimable club for gentlemen interested in the arts, in 1896. It remains there to this day.
