- Baron Sheffield
Baron Sheffield is a title that has been created four times: once in the
Peerage of England , twice in thePeerage of Ireland , and once in thePeerage of the United Kingdom . The first creation was in the Peerage of England in 1547. The later barons were raised to the Earldom of Mulgrave, then the Marquessate of Normanby, and finally the Dukedom of Buckingham and Normanby. At the death of the second Duke, however, all of the titles became extinct since no heirs to them remained. The next three creations were all in favour of one person, John Baker-Holroyd. In 1781 he was created Baron Sheffield, of Dunnamore in the County of Meath, in the
Peerage of Ireland , with remainder to the heirs male of his body. Two years later, in 1783, he was made Baron Sheffield, of Roscommon in the County of Roscommon, also in thePeerage of Ireland , but with remainder, failing heirs male of his body, to the heirs male of his daughters from his first marriage. In 1802 Lord Sheffield was created Baron Sheffield, ofSheffield in the County of York, in thePeerage of the United Kingdom , and in 1816 he was even further honoured when he was made Viscount Pevensey and Earl of Sheffield in thePeerage of Ireland . The latter titles were all created with remainder to the heirs male of his body. He was succeeded by his son from his second marriage, the second Earl. On the death in 1909 of the latter's son, the third Earl, the Earldom, Viscountcy and Baronies of 1781 and 1802 became extinct. However, he was succeeded in the Barony of 1783 according to the special remainder by Edward Lyulph Stanley, 4th Baron Stanley of Alderley, who became the 4th Baron Sheffield as well. He was the grandson of Lady Maria Josepha Holroyd, daughter of the first Earl of Sheffield. The titles remain united.Barons Sheffield, First Creation (1547)
