Zagreb and started his professional career playing forDinamo Zagreb in 1978. He moved to Dinamo Vinkovci in 1982, but soon changed his club by moving toRed Star Belgrade in 1983. In 1985, he transferred to his first foreign club as he joined Tirol Innsbruck fromAustria , where he played until 1988. After short spells withWiener Sportclub and Racing Genk, he went on to move to Portuguese club Sporting Lisbon in 1989 and continued to play for the club until 1993. He subsequently continued to play in Portugal for Estoril, Vitória Setúbal andBelenenses before going into retirement.With the Yugoslav national team, he participated at the Euro 1984 in
France , won the bronze medal at the 1984 Summer Olympics inLos Angeles , and reached the quarterfinals of the1990 FIFA World Cup inItaly , where the team was defeated by Argentina in thepenalty shootout and Ivković himself became remembered for savingDiego Maradona 's kick. Ivković already saved a penalty from Maradona in the UEFA Cup earlier, when Sporting Lisboa played Napoli, and the two allegedly had a bet on the possible outcome of another penalty before their World Cup match, which Ivković won.He was the Croatian national team's goalkeeping coach between 2004 and 2006, but was replaced on this position by
