- HMS Hereward (H93)
HMS "Hereward" (H93), named after
Hereward the Wake , was an H-classdestroyer of theRoyal Navy laid down by the High Walker Yard ofVickers Armstrong atNewcastle-on-Tyne on 28 February 1935, launched on 10 March 1936 and commissioned on 9 December 1936. "Hereward" participated in theBattle of Calabria in July 1940, theBattle of Cape Matapan in March 1941 and the evacuation ofGreece in April 1941. On 25 February, 1941, she also took part ofOperation Abstention , an ill-fated attempt to seize the Italian island ofKastelorizo ."Hereward" was attacked by enemy German and Italian dive bombers as she evacuated British Commonwealth forces fromCrete and was sunk inKaso Strait east of Crete on29 May 1941 by Junkers Ju 87 "Stukas".HMS Herewald successfully evacuated the Dutch monarch from the
Netherlands in May 1940.
