Susan R. Wessler, Ph.D. (1953- ) is an American plant
molecular biologist andgeneticist . She is on the faculty of theUniversity of Georgia (UGA).Wessler was born in
New York City . She graduated from theBronx High School of Science . She received her bachelor's degree in 1974 inBiology from theState University of New York at Stony Brook and her Ph.D. inBiochemistry fromCornell University in 1980. She was a postdoctoral fellow at theCarnegie Institution of Washington in the Department ofEmbryology from 1980-1982. She joined the faculty at UGA in1983 as an assistant professor ofbotany becoming a full professor in1992 . She was named Distinguished Research Professor in1994 and Regents Professor in2005 .In
2006 , Professor Wessler was named aHoward Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) Professor. She is also a professor at large at theKeck Graduate Institute at theClaremont Colleges inClaremont, California .Her research focuses on identifying plant
transposable elements and determining how they contribute togene andgenome evolution .Education and honors
