Joseph Bradford Carr (
August 16 ,1828 –February 24 ,1895 ) was a general in theUnion Army during theAmerican Civil War .Biography
Carr was born in
Albany, New York , and worked as atobacco nist. He was appointedcolonel of the2nd New York Volunteer Infantry Regiment onMay 14 ,1861 , and took part in the engagement at Big Bethel. He served under Maj. Gen.George B. McClellan throughout thePeninsula Campaign and was promoted to brigadier general onSeptember 7 ,1862 , for gallantry at Malvern Hill. As a brigade commander in III Corps,Army of the Potomac , General Carr participated in the battles of Fredericksburg and Chancellorsville (commanding a division during a part of the latter after the death ofHiram Berry ).He was distinguished for gallantry at Gettysburg, where he was wounded and his men stubbornly held their ground near the Peach Orchard. He commanded 3rd division III Corps in the autumn campaigns of 1863. A problem with his commission kept him off the battlefield until nearly the end of the war. He commanded a garrison in the
Army of the James at the time of theAppomattox Campaign . In 1865, Carr was brevetted as a major general of volunteers.Post-war and death
After the close of the war, he became a manufacturer in
Troy, New York , a Republican politician in New York State He wasSecretary of State of New York from 1880 to 1885. In 1885, he ran on the Republican ticket forLieutenant Governor of New York with Ira Davenport, but was defeated.Carr died in Troy, New York, and is buried there in Oakwood Cemetery.
