The School originally opened on 13 February 1956 as a three-room, two-teacher school with 54 pupils. Building had begun in the spring of 1955, despite objections from parents who did not want to send their children to a school "in the bush" with no access road, fences or electricity. Until nearby residential subdivision in the mid-1970s, the school was accessible only by two tracks - one from Beach Road and Flora Terrace, and the other from Ozone Road.
