Victoria Derbyshire (born 2 October 1968 in Ramsbottom, England) is a journalist and radio broadcaster who currently presents the morning programme on BBC Radio 5 Live between 9am and 12pm.

Biography

Derbyshire worked in local radio after leaving university and joined BBC Radio 5 Live in 1998 as a co-presenter of the breakfast show with Julian Worricker. The programme won a Gold Sony Award in 1998 and 2002.

In January 2003, Worricker left the breakfast show and Derbyshire was partnered with Nicky Campbell. Her sister, Alex, became a newsreader at the station. In October 2003, it was announced that she would replace Fi Glover as host of the morning phone-in programme. She began broadcasting from this slot in the Summer of 2004, and has remained there ever since. She has also appeared in and worked on a number of television programmes over the past decade including: "The Club", "Central Weekend", "Faking It" and "The Apprentice - You're Fired".

Broadcasting style

Derbyshire's programme is a blend of topical debate, news, sport, showbusiness gossip and human interest stories. Members of the public are encouraged to participate in the show by ringing, e-mailing or texting the station with views and comment or sharing their experiences with other listeners.

She is largely characterised by her candid and personable approach to broadcasting which, unfortunately, has not always endeared her to the listening public or some of her guests. Jamie Oliver once referred to her as "that cynical bitch from Five Live"Fact|date=October 2008 and she attracted widespread criticism for interviewing the convicted paedophile Jonathan King after his release from prison.

Nevertheless, together with fellow presenter Simon Mayo (who hosts the afternoon programme), she is now widely regarded as one of the mainstays of the station's weekday output.

Personal life

Derbyshire became embroiled in a tabloid scandal in 2003 after becoming romantically involved with Mark Sandell, then partner of fellow Five Live presenter Fi Glover.
