Forster, 1801[verification needed]Paranotothenia magellanica, the Maori cod, is also known as Magellanic rockcod, blue notothenia or orange throat notothen. "Maori chief" and "black cod", sometimes used for this species, usually refer to fishes from the related genus Notothenia. It is a cod icefish in the family Nototheniidae commercially harvested from the Southern Ocean. It is found at depths down to 255 m, and its length is between 15 and 40 cm. It is a member of the order Perciformes and thus unrelated to the true cods.
