* For watch bearings, a jewel bearing made ofruby , comprising a ring (the "hole") with a sink for oil, is invented by Nicholas Facio with Peter andJacob Debaufre , who used pierced natural rubies. Other gemstones have been used since, includinggarnet (which is too soft) anddiamond s. In the20th century , synthetic ruby orsapphire becomes universal for jewel bearings.
