Fredrik Meltzer

Fredrik Meltzer

Fredrik Meltzer (29 September 1779 – 17 December 1855) was a Norwegian businessman and politician from Bergen. Fredrik Meltzer married Margaretha Stub with whom he had 13 children. In 1814, Fredrik Meltzer was a member of the constituent assembly and one of the signatories of the Norwegian Constitution of 17 May 1814. He represented the city of Bergen in the Norwegian parliament from 1821 to 1828.

Meltzer designed the flag of Norway in 1821. He chose to use a Nordic cross to reflect Norway's close ties with Sweden and Denmark, and the colors red, white and blue in order to symbolize the liberal ideals associated with the French and American Revolutions.
