TechSpot was originally named 'Pure Rendition'. In early 1998, the website was started as a personal project of Julio J. Franco and was hosted on a free account on
FortuneCity . The original site became famous for reporting news on the popular 3d accelerators based on theRendition Verite graphics processors. Shortly after the site was renamed to '3D Spotlight'. As the name change implied, it no longer reported onRendition 3D products only, but on the 3d graphics and gaming scene as a whole. In 2001 the site acquired the domain rights and was renamed to "TechSpot.com". TechSpot was built upon the success of the old 3D Spotlight, now offering a broader scope on its reporting, and by that time was already receiving about 1 million readers every month.
