- James Graham, 8th Duke of Montrose
James Graham, 8th Duke of Montrose (born 6 April 1935), is the only duke who has a seat in the House of Lords as an elected hereditary peer. He is a member of the British Conservative Party and holds the position of being one of the Official Opposition's Whips.
The Duke was born in Southern Rhodesia where his father, then the Marquis of Graham, was attempting to establish a farm. He attended boarding school in Scotland, first in Aberdeenshire, and later at the Loretto School near Edinburgh.
The Duke married Canadian Catherine Young in 1970. They have a daughter, the Lady Hermione Elizabeth Graham, and two sons, James Alexander, Marquess of Graham, and the Lord Ronald John Christopher Graham. James has spent some time in China promoting renewable energy and environmental measures, and is a fluent speaker of Mandarin.
The Duke took his seat in the House of Lords on his father's death in 1992. He is the only duke to have been elected to remain in the House following the House of Lords Act 1999. (The other Duke in the Upper House, the Duke of Norfolk, did not have to stand for election as he holds the Royal Office of the Earl Marshal.) He is a Conservative spokesman on Scottish Affairs, the environment and rural affairs, and Welsh affairs.
