Bessie Delany

Bessie Delany

Dr. Annie Elizabeth (Bessie) Delany (September 3,1891 - September 25,1995), also known widely as Dr. Bessie was an African American dentist and author. After completing her studies at Columbia University in 1923 she became the second black woman dentist licensed in the State of New York.

She came to public prominence in the Unites States when she and her sister Sarah, were approached by "New York Times" reporter Amy Hill Hearth. The trio collaborated on "Having Our Say: The Delany Sisters' First 100 Years", a best-seller that was adapted as a musical which appeared on Broadway in 1995. The book was also made into a made-for-television movie which was aired on CBS.
