OUSA Clubs and Societies Centre

OUSA Clubs and Societies Centre

The Otago University Students Association Clubs And Societies Centre is a multi-purpose recreation centre at the University of Otago in Dunedin, New Zealand.

The Centre is unusual in that it is owned and operated by the Students Association not the actual University. All staff including the Centre Manager, Ross Blanch, are directly employed by the students to provide recreation programmes, support and assistance.

The Centre was built in 1981 at the instigation of Harry Evison a University employee who had unsuccessfully tried to convince the University to fund the construction of the Centre. When they declined Evison persuaded the Students Association to fund the project instead.

Today Centre staff provide a wide range of recreation programmes (including Yoga, Kickboxing and Pilates) as well as assisting the various student sporting, political, cultural and religious clubs on campus in a variety of ways. The Otago University Tramping Club and Otago University NORML two of the largest clubs on campus, operate out of the Centre. Centre staff are also responsible for several other buildings including the OUSA Aquatic Centre (home of the Otago University Rowing Club) and the OU Squash Courts.
