Henry Sibley High School was founded in 1954. The current school was built in 1971 to serve students in grades 10-12. Today, it serves students in grades 9-12 and houses the district’s administrative offices. It is currently remodeling the main offices, expanding the cafeteria, and remodeling science spaces, thanks to passage of a facilities and technology referendum in 2004. It serves as the public high school for the communities of Mendota Heights, a large part of Eagan, Mendota, Sunfish Lake, Lilydale, West St. Paul and parts of Inver Grove Heights. It is a member of the Classic Suburban Conference.

Renovations

The District 197 School Board approved the design proposal for Henry Sibley in March 2006. On April 17, the School Board approved construction bids for work on Henry Sibley. Shaw Lundquist Associates was selected for interior renovation with a base bid of $17,347,000. This is also the reason the textbooks were in such fine condition. The Board also approved full replacement of tile, which was bid as an alternate job to ensure higher priority items were covered first. Building Restoration Corporation was awarded the work for exterior restoration with a base bid of $1,518,410.

Sibley's remodeling will span three years so that active construction can be limited to summer. The first visible project is the site remodeling began in June 2006. The school is not only adding an extension to the cafeteria but also a new weight room.In the second year of Renovations the 3rd and 2nd floors are completely remodeled. There is also a completely new cafeteria that will be joined with a completely new 1st floor next year. The school also has around 100 Macbooks for students in class and all teachers have one as well.

The “Warriors” is a name rich in history and tradition in its community. Henry Sibley High School has always been named the Warriors and has always had the Warrior as the mascot. However, what the mascot looks like has gone through some pretty major changes. Henry Sibley has been a high school since 1954. The existing building has been open since 1971. Over these many years, the Warrior mascot, much like the community itself, has been transformed due to many factors. The first Warrior mascot was the Indianhead. This mascot endured for many years until 1996. At the same time through the 1950s and 1960s, the symbol of local shopping center Signal Hills was a neon Indian sending signals with a blanket over a fire. Times change and sensitivity shifts, and the mascot was spoken up against. The Henry Sibley student council led the main thrust to change the symbol, because it was led by individuals who realize the damage done by years of imagery degrading to Native Americans. There were mascot committees created at each of the schools. Name changes were being discussed as well as mascot changes. A large contingent of community members went to the school board and asked the board to keep the mascot name as is. The school board agreed that the school has always been the Warriors and it should continue to be. The Warrior mascot was transformed from the Indianhead to the Griffin which was part of the original Coat of Arms. In 1999, the Griffin mascot was again transformed into the current Henry Sibley mascot; the Knight. The Knight is a medieval Warrior, thus keeping history and tradition alive.
