Matt Barbet

Matthew "Matt" Barbet (born 1976) is a British television journalist who presents 5 News. He was previously a presenter and reporter for BBC London from 2003 to 2007, presented BBC London's Children in Need coverage in 2006 and he also acted as an occasional presenter on BBC Breakfast in 2007, as a cover for main weekend presenter, Bill Turnbull.

Early life

Matt attended the Alun School, Mold and later studied at Cardiff University before returning to the city's Journalism school.

Career

BBC

Before joining BBC London, Barbet worked at BBC Radio 1 as a newsreader on the Sara Cox Breakfast Show. He also presented the BBC's STORYFix programme - a light, upbeat look at the news shown on BBC News 24 and the BBC website.

5 News

In September 2007, Barbet was named as a presenter and correspondent on 5 News. His position came after Kirsty Young, the principal anchor, announced her departure from the programme. He took up his new role in November 2007.^[1] In June 2008, Barbet and Isla Traquair, were announced as stand-in presenters on 5 News while Natasha Kaplinsky was on maternity leave.^[2] Barbet visited Haiti in January 2010 after the earthquake and has also been embedded with the British Army in Afghanistan.^[3][4] In February 2011, he was announced as the new presenter of the flagship 17:00 programme, after Kaplinsky left the station.^[5]

Personal life

Matt lives in London with his wife, Katie and baby daughter, Manon.^[6]
