Royal Navy have been named HMS "Edinburgh", for the Scottish city ofEdinburgh . In addition, one ship of the Royal Navy has carried the similar name HMS "Duke of Edinburgh".HMS Edinburgh
* The first HMS "Edinburgh" originally the
Royal William , a 32 gun 5th rate, was transferred from theRoyal Scottish Navy in 1707, lasting only two years before being sunk as breakwater atHarwich .
* The second HMS "Edinburgh", a 70 gun third rate, was renamed from HMS "Warspite" in 1721, rebuilt twice atChatham Dockyard in 1721 and 1744, before being broken up in 1771 inPlymouth .
* The third HMS "Edinburgh" was a 74 gun third rate, built in 1811. In 1846 the vessel was modified into a screw configuration before being sold in 1865.
* The fourth HMS "Edinburgh", a turretbattleship was at first named HMS "Majestic", but was renamed two days before being launched in March 1882. The ship was sold in October 1910.
* The fifth HMS "Edinburgh" was a Town-classlight cruiser . Launched atSwan Hunter in 1939, the ship saw extensive war service before being stuck by atorpedo and then scuttled in theBarents Sea in mid-1942.
* The sixth and present "HMS Edinburgh" is aType 42 destroyer .HMS "Duke of Edinburgh"
*The first and as of 2007 only HMS "Duke of Edinburgh" (1904) was the name ship of a class of armoured cruisers.
