Mayumi Tendo

Mayumi Tendo

Mayumi Tendo (天堂真弓 "Tendō Mayumi") is a character in the novel "Battle Royale", and the film and manga of the same name. In the movie version, she was played by Haruka Nomiyama.

Mayumi has a blood type of O.

Pre-Program

Mayumi Tendo is one of the class of third-year students at the fictional Shiroiwa Junior High School. She was an attractive girl (possibly one of the prettiest girls behind Mitsuko, Sakura and Chigusa) and in the Manga, she had a long ponytail and a pretty face. In the Movie, she had two pig tails. In the novel and manga, there aren't many details are given about her life before the program, except for the fact that she was rumored to have partaken in "telephone dating", which caused some to regard her as a slut (in the Manga, this was probably untrue due to the group she hung out with) Hirono Shimizu knew that Mayumi appeared prim and proper but participated in the dating. But in one scene during the Manga in a flashback, Mayumi hung out with Yukie Utsumi's gang with Izumi Kanai, so it was probably true that Izumi and Mayumi were close friends along with Yukie's gang, but she died before she had the chance to meet up with any of them. But in this version, she is the only student not to say any single word. In the Ultimate edition, we are probably going to get to know more about Mayumi and her life before the Program.

In the movie however, she was one of the students who bullied Noriko Nakagawa by locking her in the toilets, along with Fumiyo Fujiyoshi and Yoshimi Yahagi. Both Manga and Movie versions of Mayumi are different in ways of how she was.

During The Program

After Yoshio Akamatsu (Male Student No. 1) decides to snipe at students from the roof of the school and above the exit, Mayumi is the first target that Yoshio Akamatsu has a clear shot of (after Takako Chigusa (Female Student No. 13) and Sho Tsukioka (Male Student No. 14) escape his reach). In the novel, Yoshio shoots her in the back with a bolt from his crossbow, thus making her the first student to die in the course of the actual game. In the manga she is shot through the side of the face, apparently having died instantly. Shuya mourns her when he comes out the school before he notices Akamatsu. In the movie version, she is shot through the neck as she comes out the school, and manages to speak to Shuya Nanahara briefly saying "Nanahara.. What is this?" Akamatsu then shoots at Shuya, but misses; the bolt hits Mayumi in the leg as she dies.

In the novel the bodies of Mayumi and Yoshino, are used as a display to the seriousness of the game. Since the students leaving the school see their murdered bodies within seconds they are shown that there are students willing to kill.

Her weapon in the manga is a pair of nunchaku, as seen in Chapter 4, page 43, when Kazushi Niida attacks Takako Chigusa with the nunchaku. As Niida started out with a shamisen banjo, and the crossbow was originally Yoshio Akamatsu's, the nunchaku must therefore have been given to Mayumi. Her weapon in the movie is a pair of boxing gloves.
