Vithis is a main character in Ian Irvine's "The Well of Echoes" quartet. He is clan leader of Clan Inthis and leader of the Aachim of Aachan. He wished to set out and conqeur Santhenar, but abandoned this, after Tiaan Liise-Mar attacks him with a flying construct. Vithis is the foster-father of Minis.

Characteristics

Vithis is a tall man, with long black hair, which turns to a silver grey by the end of Chimaera. He has a grim, lined face and dark circles around his eyes. Vithis possesses the usual characteristics of the Aachim, such as the extremely long fingers, almost twice the size of his palms. He speaks in a deceptively slow manner.

Vithis is a hard, unlikeable man, who is arrogant in his apparent superiority. He is cruel and has broken the spirit of his foster-son, so as to control him. Vithis sees the old humans as primitive; he cannot bear to negotiate and must always demand. Like many of the line of Inthis, he is proud to the point of folly.

Vithis's Role

Geomancer

Vithis first appears in one of Tiaan's communications with the Aachim. He is against the use of the Amplimet and of Tiaan, in the use of saving the Aachim and bringing them to Santhenar. However he does have a desire for the Amplimet and fears that Tiaan will destroy it. Vithis would prefer to face his fate on his own world and believes that no good has ever come out of Santhenar. Vithis even states that he would sooner send his clan to The Well of Echoes. However he decides to use Tiaan, knowing that she would likely die in the process of saving the Aachim. Tiaan is under the deception that she and Minis will be allowed to marry once he arrives on Santhenar.

When Tiaan arrives at Tirthrax, she finds that it is abandoned and it seems that the Aachim are doomed to die in the volcanic hell that was Aachan. However the Aachim teach her how to create a gate from Santhenar to Aachan and she attempts to save them.

The gate is successful and Vithis orders his Clan Inthis to stay back as Tiaan had made the gate wrong-handed. Inthis disobey Vithis, keen to leave the dieing world and as Vithis wrests control of the gate from Tiaan, somebody malevolently forces the gate to go awry, sending First Clan into oblivion.

As the Aachim come through the gate in constructs, Tiaan tells her adopted-sister, Haani, to hide. Vithis blames Tiaan for the deaths of Clan Inthis and seeing as he and Minis are all that remain of First Clan, he denies Tiaan and Minis the right to marry. In fact Vithis never had any intention of allowing such a union. Haani runs out into the open during the argument and a frightened Aachim fires at her. Haani is struck full in the chest by a projectile and quickly dies. Vithis and the Aachim leave Tiaan in Tirthrax, by the dead childs body, as they prepare to invade Santhenar. Tiaan declares vengeance on the Aachim, praticuarly Vithis.
