John Callaghan

John Callaghan

John Carter Callaghan (1923–2004) was a Canadian cardiac surgeon who "pioneered open-heart surgery in Alberta" cite web|url=http://www.gg.ca/honours/search-recherche/honours-desc.asp?lang=e&TypeID=orc&id=237|title=Order of Canada citation|accessdate=May 12|accessyear=2006]

Born in Hamilton, Ontario, he received his medical degree from the University of Toronto in 1946. In 1955, he joined the Division of Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery at the University of Alberta Hospital and performed Canada’s first successful open heart surgery. cite web|url=http://www.medicine100.ab.ca/physicians/100physicians/callaghan.htm|title=Physicians Of The Century|work= 100 Years of Medicine in Alberta|accessdate=May 12|accessyear=2006]

In 1985, he was made an Officer of the Order of Canada. In 1986, he was inducted into the Alberta Order of Excellence.
