Robert Carter Nicholas (1793 -
December 24 ,1857 ) was aUnited States Senator fromLouisiana . Born inHanover, Virginia , he served in theWar of 1812 as a captain and major. He attended theCollege of William and Mary inWilliamsburg, Virginia , and moved to Louisiana, where he became a sugar planter inTerrebonne Parish in 1820.Nicholas was elected as a
Jacksonian (later, a Democrat to the U.S. Senate to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Senator-electCharles E.A. Gayarre and served fromJanuary 13 ,1836 , toMarch 3 ,1841 . He wasSecretary of State of Louisiana from 1843 to 1846, when he resigned; he died in Terrebonne Parish in 1857. Interment was in the Burthe vault, St. Louis Cemetery,New Orleans .Nicholas was a nephew of John Nicholas, a
U.S. Representative andWilson Cary Nicholas , a U.S. Senator and Representative, both ofVirginia .Robert Nicholas was the son of
