Shaikh Zayed Medical College

Shaikh Zayed Medical College (SZMC) is located at Rahim Yar Khan, Punjab, Pakistan. It is named in honor of Shaikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan.

Introduction

In 2003, the Government of Punjab has established a unique, self financing Sheikh Zayed Medical College (SZMC) for "undergraduate" Medical "students and attached to Sheikh Zayed Hospital. It was a long standing dream of the people of Southern Punjab and the establishment of SZMC is a great blessing for the people of District Rahim Yar Khan,at the junction of three Provinces". According to the requirement of Pakistan Medical Dental Council, Board of Management,Sheikh Zayed Hospital, has created posts for teaching and allied staff, authenticated by Finance Department. Teaching posts have been filled with teachers and Professors of the highest rank and contractual recruitment of Assistant Professors of the disciplines is under way. Supporting Staff have also been recruited on contractual basis. As a result, SZMC is now functioning at par with any other teaching institution.

With this aim, its first entry landed at Quaid-e-Azam Medical College (QAMC), Bahawalpur in 2003. Sheikh Zayed Medical College Campus was established in the building of Sheikh Zayed Hospital which is now attached with college and started its working in Jan, 2005, where admissions of 2005 reported. Later, second year class was called from QAMC to SZMC in April, 2005.

This set up is temporary for almost three years and new campus is proposed to be built at Mehmood Stadium, almost 20 acres area, adjacent to Sheikh Zayed Medical Complex. Construction work is likely to start in the near future. The City: RAHIM YAR KHAN Rahim Yar Khan is one of the modern district headquarter cities in Punjab. Although the city seems a far off place to those living in Lahore, Rawalpindi or Islamabad, but the city has very good civic facilities. It is situated on the main Railway line and on main national highway linking Karachi & Lahore and is connected with rest of Pakistan by air, rail and road and all types of telecommunication links are available.

Al-Nayhan Family, the ruling family of Abu Dhabi has undertaken a large number of welfare projects including Sheikh Zayed Hospital Complex, Sheikh Zayed Public College, and school. Police Rehabilitation Centre, Air port has been built with monetary help of the Royal Family. It is 4th largest airport of the country.

The people who have not visited R. Y. Khan think that this is a desert city but it is pertinent to point out that it is surrounded by lush green agricultural land and there are vast stretches of miles of gardens of mangoes and canals run through this area. Vast stretches of Cholistan Desert around some areas of Rahim Yar Khan cast there mesmerizing effects on the mind of the people during the night when the moon is in full bloom.On the east of the city is desert landscape with rich preserved wild life and on the west river Indus flows to its destiny Arabian Sea. This District comprises of four Tehsils with an estimated population of 41 lacks and area of 11880 sq. kilometers.
