Garden Street "russian: Улица Садовая" or Sadovaya Street is a major thoroughfare in
Central Saint Petersburg . It runs from the west part of theFontanka Embankment , to thePalace Embankment . The street is a major commercial street, mostly around theHay Square and the crossing withNevsky Prospekt . The street is home to many markets, likeMerchant Yard , Apraksin Yard, and theHay Market .History
The street was built ca. 1710, and run from Nevsky Prospekt to the
Gorokhovaya Street . The street was filled with wealthy estates, with large gardens, from where the street got its name. Later on, ca. 1730, the street was being built on to the southwestern direction, and two squares were built; Hay Square andTurgenev Square .Later on, ca. 1820, the street was being built northwards on to theField of Mars (Saint Petersburg) .Garden Street was the trading center ofSaint Petersburg in the 18th to the 19th century.Transport
