Sean O'Neill, 3rd Earl of Tyrone

Sean O'Neill, 3rd Earl of Tyrone

Sean O'Neill, 3rd Earl of Tyrone. Sean left Ireland with his father Hugh O'Neill and Rory O'Donnell, 1st Earl of Tyrconnell during the Flight of the Earls in September 1607 and to the European continent. The family moved around various Catholic Courts but eventually settled with his father in Rome under the protection of the Pope.

Once old enough, he moved to The Spanish Netherlands in what is now Belgium, where he took up service to the Spanish crown in one of the Irish regiments there. While there he, like his other O'Neill cousins, constantly planned the return of his father and the restoration of the Gaelic order in Ulster. When his father died in Rome in 1615, Sean assumed the title of Earl of Tyrone. His ascent was blessed by both the Pope and the Infanta Isabella of Spain, the Royal Governor of the Spanish Netherlands. His title was established as Spanish a creation (Conde, or Count). The title of 2nd Earl granted by Queen Elizabeth of England and Kingdom of Ireland to his father had been attainted after his flight in a judgment dated 1609.

Sean married at least twice and had two known sons: Hugh Eugene with his first wife and Patrick with his second. Both sons returned with Sean's 1st cousin, Owen Roe O'Neill, to Ireland and fought in the Irish Confederate War 1641-1649. Sean returned to Spain after the fall of the Irish Confederate Army in 1650 and joined the Spanish Army. He served in Spain, dying in battle near Madrid in 1660.

His sons both ascended titles. Hugh Eugene returned to Spain with his father and after his death took the Vatican and Spanish recognized title as the 4th Earl of Tyrone. Patrick returned to Holland after the Irish war in 1650. He took the Netherlands recognized title as the 1st Count of Tyrone. Both brothers had heirs.
